Team formation techniques in education
Collaborative learning is gaining acceptance as one of the most successful educational approaches to learning. The basic idea is to organise learners in groups to work together and solve problems or complete tasks. There is ample evidence that when learners actively engage in discussions, listen to different viewpoints, and defend their positions, they better understand new concepts and learn faster. A particular case of collaborative learning is co-operative learning, where each student is responsible for at least one specific aspect or competence needed to solve the problem jointly. The student is improving her understanding through collaboration with others and is also responsible for the group's success concerning the aspect she is responsible for.
Microsoft Malware Winners' Interview: 1st place, "NO to overfitting!"
Team "say NOOOOO to overfittttting" did just that and took first place in the Microsoft Malware Classification Challenge. Sponsored by the WWW 2015 / BIG 2015 conferences, competitors were given nearly half a terabyte of data (when uncompressed!) and tasked with classifying variants of malware into their respective families. This blog outlines their winning approach and includes key visuals from their analysis. Little Boat: I was learning Python by doing the Harvard CS109 online, and was trying to find some practical projects to do. Then Google suggested Kaggle (not surprised!).

In one corner, there's a newbie, 5G-- higher bandwidth networks promising super-fast speed and increased responsiveness and reliability. And in the other, artificial intelligence (AI)--technology that can analyze massive amounts of data and learn from previous actions. But combined together, 5G networks and AI have the potential to pack a significantly more powerful punch. 'Go back to Mexico': Children who won elementary school robotics competition endure racist abuse
A group of schoolchildren who won a robotics competition were subjected to a barrage of racist abuse from some rival pupils and their parents who shouted: "Go back to Mexico". It was the first time that pupils from Pleasant Run Elementary School had entered the robotics challenge. Their victory over the youngsters from other Indianapolis schools, put them a step closer to the state championship. Yet as the children, aged nine and ten, left the event and walked out to the parking area, some of the children they had just beaten, along with their parents, unleashed racist comments.
